if it is not too personal, who is your confirmation saint and how did you pick them?

In my family, you pick names that honor members of the family. My sister chose Agnes after my grandmother, another chose Mary after my aunt. When one chose Joan simply because they liked Joan of Arc, my aunt was scandalized.

I chose Saint Declan, after my only beloved brother. It is a happy coincidence that Saint Declan (whose name means "man of prayer") proved to be a model that I wanted to emulate anyway.

This is the Skyship Navigators or simply Navigators AU, which exists in a universe I created a couple years ago, and just plonked the Terror guys as women in there. Actually, there are 2 stories taking place in this world before this AU which have nothing to do w The Terror, but more on those at another time.

In a nutshell, this universe is somewhat similar to our Earth, yet the rules of magic, science and such are different. No machine more advanced than a steam engine can really exist in there; at least, not in a large scale because of Anomalies.

Centuries ago, an event called the Seven Days of Calamity happened, which then made advanced machinery unusable, and caused pocket disturbances all over the planet (think of the book Roadside Picnic or the Divine Cities trilogy). These Anomalies vary in shape, size and abilities, but they essentially made land travel very risky and travel by sea nearly impossible. This is why humanity uses skyships for trade and travel, and the role of navigators has changed as well.

Because in the aftermath of the Calamity, new powers entered the picture: the fae, the arcane and saints which each existed before, but on a much more obscure scale. Also, there is no Christianity or Catholicism here they way it is in our world, it all works differently as the saints don't pray to God to grant miracles or to save someone, they themselves help their navigator.

There are 4 types of navigators: the Faeguided, arcane navigators (commonly known as ‘conduits’), saint-guided navigators (c.k. as ‘vessels’) and the Comedians, a rogue faction relying on lost then unearthed knowledge. Their job is to ensure the ship takes a safe route through the sky, with some help.

For brevity’s sake, arcane navigation relies on harnessing arcane magic to find safe paths, but it is highly addictive, and prolonged usage will lead to loss of sensation in the limbs and then to gradual paralysis. This can be mitigated by using arcane yet again to regain feeling, but this will make it all worse in the long run. But it’s the most powerful navigation type, as a conduit can also protect the ship itself from outside damage by conjuring shields.

Saint-guided navigators, as the name suggests, rely on the guidance and protection of their patron saint, each navigator having one. It is the “safest bet” of navigation, and the most prestigious. The Aerial Admiralty, who issues out navigators and deals with their training prefers it over the others.

Now for Dundy and Fitzjames:

Henriette Tamsin Dundas Le Vesconte (or Dundy to her friend(s)) is a middle-grade, but competent and reliable arcane navigator, assigned to be the core navigator on HMS Erebus alongside Fitzjames, with HMS Terror having saint-guided navigators Garnet Gore (originally from Erebus, a last-minute change) and Johanna Irving. Dundy is easy-going and easy to like, yet under the surface she can be quite headstrong and selfish, and can sometimes treat people with elegantly disguised impatience. She and Fitzjames have known each other since their early days at the Admiralty, had a thing back then, split while remaining the best of friends, but still land in each other’s arms from time to time.

Now, “She Who Lights the Way”, James or Jaimie Fitzjames (she uses both) is the poster child of the Admiralty, the ideal saint-guided navigator. Her patron saint is Saint James the Unblemished (partly why she decided to stick w James), whose jawbone she keeps sealed inside a compartment in her helmet (many vessels do this with relics). Normally, a prolonged patronage of a saint leads to the loss of individual identity, hallucinations and dissociation, but so far James remained largely unaffected. Graceful, decisive and brave, she is often first in line to protect the ship and has been employed on warships before, earning a gilded reputation. However, she keeps her past battle injuries a secret and her presence can be somewhat of an annoyance with her seemingly endless anecdotes. She never said it out loud, but losing Dundy would be a great tragedy for her, as she remains her best, and perhaps only friend.

But much will change during the course of that fateful expedition…

St. Declan of Ardmore

Patronage: Ardmore, Ireland, The Dioceses of Waterford and Lisman

Saint Declan was born a prince of the Decius (the ruling class) tribe of Celts. Baptized by St. Colman, he was the first person to bring Christianity to Ireland, before St. Patrick, though only locally. He was the bishop of Ardmore and established a monastery there. His well, known as “the waters of St. Declan”, still has healing properties. St. Patrick and St. David of Wales considered him as a friend. He died “in a narrow place beside the sea” called Declan’s Desert. Local Catholics celebrate his feast day, called his “pattern” on July 24.

The simple statement took Declan by surprise. For a moment he couldn’t reply; he could barely even breathe. It was as though his brain had completely shut off at hearing those words.

I’m proud of you.

Had anyone even said that to him before? Had he ever made anyone proud? Certainly he had tried to, many times over the years. His father, his brother, Meredith. Cullen. All he had ever wanted was to do good, to make someone proud. For someone to acknowledge that he could do good for once. Somehow knowing it was Tav to be the one who told him so made it all the better.

There had been so many reason Tav shouldn’t be proud of him, though. The way he had treated mages in the past, the way he was always fighting, the lyrium… how could Tav be proud? Declan had tried his best to put his past behind him, though. He was trying to be good now, to prove he wasn’t as much of an asshole as before. Maybe it was starting to show after all.

“Do you really mean that?” He asked softly, a shy smile crossing his face. “I… I want to make you proud, Tav. I want to be the kind of man that you would… would be happy to know. Be happy to love.

like you know he's so good with kids from countless interactions with his teammate's children and those kids on matchdays, so it doesn't surprise you when:

he asks the club so he can walk alongside your kid on every home matchdays

your kid's bit of an introvert, somewhat like you, so he always makes sure they're comfortable. including striking up convos with other kids present so they're no longer nervous

he holds your kid's hand, putting over the jacket if they're cold, or even hold your kid in his arm if they don't feel like walking that day

he always catches your kid after a match ends, nothing beats the feeling where he has your kid in his arms, safe and sound, no matter the result

eventho he's tired after a match, he always has time to run another lap with your kid so they can try to kick some ball on a real pitch (bcs they've been complaining your backyard's not big enough to play ball)

he always takes his family for a lunch or dinner (depending on the match's schedule) after a home match, it's now a tradition you're all looking forward too

your kid gives a knee support at every christmas because they don't want declan getting hurt while playing AND HE WEARS THEM WITHOUT FAIL

I think if we ever got bi declan real it would have been done in like a one paragraph anecdote in his internal monologue about the most boring gay experience in the world and never brought up again. like at some point he would've been like 'once declan had slept with a senator's son, a man with the false american charm and loud presence of one used to getting what they wanted, for the political advantage. he had left promptly the next morning as if merely returning from a meeting, and had spent almost a whole hour staring at guido reni's st sebastian which he had stolen from the dulwich gallery without anyone noticing. the twisting, erotic form of the man seemed untouchably alien to anything declan could reach. what declan had felt the night before was merely a polite transaction - nothing like the passion this saint achieved just by dying' and it would leave us still kinda uncertain as whether or not that means he's actually into men or not

A rare grin spread across Declan's face. Hearing his fellow former Templar's voice again was more of a comfort than he had expected it to be. Being the Herald was already such a heavy burden, and not having many friends to aid in his bearing it only made things worse.

"Thank the maker you're here, though. I thought Cullen was going to be the only person I knew. And I'm still just Declan, you know. No need for that Herald nonsense; not between comrades. Can't say I really know my way around yet myself, but I can show you well enough."

His words may have sounded harsh but the blossoming smile spreading across his freckled face told true. Eden was happy to see his old comrade well and whole.

Even after having spent time with Tav, and having slowly gotten used to being around mages in general, it was still Declan's instinct to flinch away as Tav reached for his face. The cut on his eyebrow was likely a horrid sight, he knew - it wasn't the first time he had gotten his face cut open like that. It wasn't even the first time he had gotten punch like that either; though it was the first time the assaulter had still been wearing their gauntlets. The metal had sliced his brow clean open if the blood that had dripped into his eyes was any indication.

For a moment, he just stared at Tav, surprise etched across his face. This was Tav; Declan knew the man would never hurt him. But he also still never expected anyone to... care. Not enough to want to help him. Commander Cullen had cared enough to intervene at least, stopping the man Declan had been fighting from actually killing him. That was as far as the caring had gone, however. Yet now this silly, adorable, wonderful elf that Dec was slowly calling friend was... taking care of him. It left a strange, warm fluttering feeling in his gut.

He swallowed hard, his eyes meeting Tavrayn's. Finally he inched closer to him, letting the man lean in to clean the wound. Dec hissed slightly at the sting but didn't pull away. Tav was close, so close, close enough that Dec could ki...

No. No. He couldn't let himself go down that path now, there was too much at stake. He couldn't risk losing Tav's friendship like that. Still, his cheeks reddened at the closeness of the elf, and Dec couldn't pull his eyes away from Tav's face.

"You don't have to do this, you know," he finally murmured, wincing again as the wound was pressed into. "I could have taken care of it myself like I always do. Or gone to see my brother, he would have probably healed it... after he finished laughing anyway. You don't... I... What I mean is... Thank you, Tavrayn."
